Job Title: Compliance Specialist


Job Description

We are seeking a Compliance Specialist to perform environmental due diligence and compliance assessments, and audit compliance reports at local, state, and federal levels. The role requires spending approximately 75% of the time in the office and 25% in the field.


Responsibilities

  • Plan, execute, and coordinate project activities related to regulatory compliance, with a focus on hazardous materials and waste management, petroleum storage tank compliance, air quality, stormwater, and wastewater programs.
  • File applications for API D numbers, registration numbers, and manage hazardous waste reporting. Assist clients with air permits, including paying permit fees and filing applications, especially when moving to new facilities.
  • Provide regulatory guidance to clients, assist in maintaining compliance, and interact with regulatory agencies. Offer support to clients who missed reporting deadlines due to internal tracking issues.
  • Conduct compliance assessments at commercial and industrial facilities, implement corrective actions, and ensure adherence to federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Perform environmental compliance audits, focusing on hazardous waste storage, transportation, disposal, and recordkeeping practices. Prepare audit reports with findings and recommendations.
  • Provide training to clients on hazardous materials handling, waste classification, and disposal requirements. Develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) and program manuals.
  • Prepare and develop contingency and emergency response plans. Implement hazardous waste management plans, including emergency response and contingency planning.
  • Identify new clients and business development opportunities within existing projects or clients. Manage and communicate results, budget, and schedule information to clients, program managers, and company leadership.
  • Evaluate regulatory applicability, conduct rule research, and interpret requirements for clients. Track compliance and meet regulatory reporting deadlines.
  • Conduct inventory of hazardous waste and materials, prepare annual reports, and submit to the California Environmental Reporting System (CERS).

Essential Skills

  • Specific experience in hazardous waste management including a deep understanding of regulations, requirements, and training.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering, geology, environmental science, or related discipline.
  • 3+ years of experience in environmental consulting, stormwater, hazardous waste management, wastewater management, wastewater engineering, stormwater design, facilities maintenance/management, environmental engineering, environmental science, geology, regulations and case law, state and federal law, federal regulations.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • 5 to 10 years of general compliance experience.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Resourceful and able to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to develop and maintain client relationships and identify sales opportunities.
  • Ability to multitask, maintain flexibility, and travel up to 25%.

Work Environment

Our office is located in Orange, California, with minimal travel required, depending on project needs. Some clients are located in National Parks and other unique locations, requiring occasional travel to places like Jackson Hole, Georgia, and Alaska, where you might even fly in via seaplane. We have a laid-back but hard-working atmosphere and a calm office environment. The work schedule is flexible, typically from 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, with occasional flexibility to work from home.
