Job Description
The main function of a Phlebotomist II is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. The role involves collecting and storing specimens according to established procedures, and ensuring proper labeling and handling of specimens.
Responsibilities
- Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and decontaminate equipment.
- Update patient information and collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
- Clearly and courteously explain the process of venipuncture, blood drawing, and/or other specimen collections as required.
- Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
- Fully understand all physicians' orders and match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
- Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport and store them at the required temperature.
- Place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately label them, and follow specific procedures for transport to maintain specimen integrity.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
- Attend annual department trainings.
- Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
Essential Skills
- Phlebotomy certification in FL
- Minimum of 1 year work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting; prefer 2-4 years of experience
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
- High School Diploma or GED
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in phlebotomy, blood draw, venipuncture, specimen collection, specimen processing, and patient information.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and data entry.
