Job Title: Product Development Formulator


Job Description

We are seeking a detail-oriented Product Development Formulator to join our team. This role focuses on developing innovative formulations across various dosage forms, troubleshooting technical challenges, and supporting the commercialization process. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in formulation development, raw material sourcing, and quality compliance within the dietary supplements or pharmaceutical industry.


Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Product Development (PD) and Quality Control (QC) Director to create formulations for diverse dosage forms, including liquids, softgels, capsules, powders, and granulations.
  • Work with the Purchasing team and PD/QC Director to develop new formulations, source raw materials, and analyze costs for feasibility.
  • Maintain accurate records of projects, formulations, and specifications, and assist the Quality Assurance team with documentation for new product development.
  • Conduct quality control (QC) analytical testing, including hands-on operation of GC, HPLC, and ICP-MS instruments.
  • Provide training for lab personnel, including annual and on-the-job training (OJT), and monitor lab staffing, supplies, and equipment needs.
  • Collaborate across departments (Sales, Quality Assurance, Purchasing, and Operations) to resolve ingredient and product-related technical issues and support new product launches.
  • Manage bench-top, pilot, and manufacturing-scale trials with minimal supervision to verify and optimize formulations.
  • Ensure the maintenance and cleanliness of laboratory equipment and oversee raw material and consumables inventory for daily lab activities.
  • Accurately collect, record, and report scientific data for all product development projects.
  • Adhere to company policies, active standard operating procedures (SOPs), and current good manufacturing practices (cGMPs).
  • Perform administrative duties as needed and other related tasks as assigned.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Chemistry, Nutrition/Dietetics, or a related discipline.
  • 2–4 years of experience in product development within the dietary supplement or pharmaceutical industry.
  • Experience in formulation and product development with a solid understanding of natural product chemistry.
  • In-depth knowledge of ingredient sourcing and formulation costing methodologies.
  • Familiarity with cGMP standards and DSHEA regulations is preferred.
  • Strong analytical skills, organizational abilities, and attention to detail.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills, with experience collaborating in cross-functional teams.
  • Proficiency in using analytical equipment (GC, HPLC, ICP-MS).
  • Knowledge of nutritional products is a plus.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • MUST have experience with nutraceuticals, specifically with fish oils.
  • 3+ years of nutraceutical experience.
  • Experience with powders and liquids, raw material, and quality control.
  • Skilled in HPLC, GC, and ICP.
  • Experience with analytical chemistry.

Work Environment

This is a 100% on-site role, operating from Monday to Friday, 8am-4:30pm. The dress code is business casual. The R&D department is in the process of being built out and is currently part of the Quality Department, consisting of approximately 20 individuals. The position reports to the VP of Technical Services.
