Laboratory Supervisor


Job Description

The Lab Supervisor will be involved in the daily operations and administration of a clinical lab specializing in Chemistry testing. This role is essential in overseeing department activities, ensuring adherence to laboratory standards, and leading a dedicated team of professionals.


Responsibilities

  • Oversee activities of the department, distribute and assign work, determine priorities, and schedule non-routine procedures.
  • Perform supervisory functions for the assigned staff including interviewing, hiring, training, and providing staff development through performance evaluation and corrective counseling.
  • Perform advanced and specialized tests and other related laboratory techniques. May duplicate work of others to confirm test results, re-evaluate methodology, make recommended changes, and assist in test interpretation.
  • Determine if further testing should be done on samples or if tests should be repeated.
  • Check and approve all specialized and problem reports for accuracy.
  • Initiate quality-control measures and monitor the quality of work for adherence to laboratory standards.
  • Complete special projects as requested, including surveys, statistical reports, studies, and research.
  • Complete training and competency assessments according to established CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and laboratory safety requirements.
  • Participate in government or regulatory agency inspections.

Essential Skills

  • Laboratory skills in Chemistry and Clinical Laboratory Science.
  • MLS (Medical Laboratory Scientist) certification.
  • ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology) certification.
  • Experience with Automated Chemistry and Special Chemistry.
  • Supervisory skills.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in a Life Science, preferably Chemistry or Medical Laboratory Science.
  • ASCP Certification - MLS or Chemistry C (ASCP).
  • 4-6 years of Clinical Lab Experience in a high-complexity testing lab.
  • Experience in Clinical Chemistry lab (preferred).
  • 1-2 years of Supervisory experience.

The work environment is a clinical lab setting with increasing volumes, requiring a high level of activity and attention to detail.
