Job Description

The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. This role involves experience with blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data, and updating patient information.


Responsibilities

  • Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
  • Properly explain the process of venipuncture, blood drawing, and other specimen collection (e.g., urine or fecal) in a clear and courteous manner.
  • Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
  • Fully understand all physicians' orders.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the test order.
  • Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
  • Package specimens for transport.
  • Store specimen samples according to required temperature and place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes.
  • Accurately label and follow specific procedures for transport to maintain the integrity of the specimen.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Attend annual department trainings.
  • Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

  • Minimum 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience preferred
  • Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state preferred
  • Experience with specimen collection, test ordering, paperwork processing, customer service, data entry, and specimen processing

Work Environment

This position is based in a Patient Service Center. The work hours are from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM Monday through Thursday, and 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Friday.

Compensation:$18.61
