Job Description
The Process and Packaging Engineer will be responsible for seamless and efficient bulk pilot and fill line trials. This role will function as a liaison between R&D, Operations, and Production to support formula development, packaging, bulk, and finished goods. The position is instrumental in transferring lab formulas to production, and developing and optimizing production processes to enable successful production runs.
Responsibilities
- Lead and track execution of line trials, identifying potential issues, adjusting as needed, and sharing findings with stakeholders.
- Support Quality and Operations in developing equipment specifications (e.g., fill weight, torque, seal test, crimping) for commercial production runs.
- Evaluate and determine suitable packaging for products, ensuring compatibility of packaging components and the availability of necessary equipment and resources.
- Assess and evaluate packaging for new projects (NPD) and changes in current packaging components.
- Coordinate packaging components and materials with Operations, R&D, and Quality Assurance teams.
- Support bulk pilot/first bulk and fill production runs, coordinating with Operations for batching and filling, and serving as a technical liaison with validation specialists for OTC documentation.
- Create manufacturing instructions and line trial protocols to identify process control parameters that minimize variation and are specific to products.
- Develop equipment Process and Packaging line workflows at different stages of the product lifecycle.
- Train Compounders and Supervisors on new processes and packaging procedures.
- Collaborate closely with all R&D scientists on formulation requirements for lab verification batches to ensure new formulations meet release specifications and can be successfully filled during manufacturing.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Essential Skills
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a relevant engineering or R&D field, ideally within the FMCG industry or a related sector.
- A Master’s degree in engineering or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience in CPGs, especially in skin care, home, beauty, and personal care product technologies.
- Previous experience with scale-up and aerosol products.
- Proven experience in process or packaging engineering in a GMP environment with OTCs.
- Knowledge of bulk processes and packing equipment principles and practices, as well as hygienic and sustainability design.
- Experience designing solutions that protect products while considering sustainability and customer experience.
- Knowledge of innovation management workflows in the personal care business.
- Ability to thrive in a dynamic environment and adjust approaches as needed.
- Experience identifying cost-effective packaging solutions while ensuring they meet all functional and aesthetic requirements.
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated analytical and critical thinking skills.
- Strong project and time management skills to coordinate multiple work streams and timelines for projects.
