Job Description

We are looking for a Senior Accounting Manager to manage all accounting operations, financial reporting, and budgeting for our firm. This role is crucial for maintaining the financial health of the business and ensuring that all projects are profitable and efficient. As we reach the next strategic growth initiatives, accurate and detailed accounting and financial management will be critical to maintain a healthy and intelligent pathway to expansion and profitability.


Responsibilities

  • Prepare accurate and timely financial statements, forecasts, and reports for management.
  • Manage budgeting, cash flow, and financial planning to ensure project and overall company profitability.
  • Conduct variance analysis and monitor project costs to keep them within budget.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and company policies.
  • Assist in the preparation of annual audits and manage relationships with auditors.
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff to maintain a smooth workflow.
  • Collaborate with project managers to track project costs and profitability.
  • Implement financial controls and processes to improve efficiency.
  • Hire, coordinate, and supervise accounting and support staff.
  • Work with external auditors, tax professionals, and insurance companies.
  • Perform all ongoing daily accounting and administrative/financial duties.
  • Oversee all aspects of the General Ledger, A/P, A/R, Payroll, Fixed Assets, and financial reporting.
  • Coordinate/interface with the company’s cost accounting system software provider.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain construction management system, including setting up projects (jobs), estimated job costs, cost codes, contracts, change orders, purchase orders, and, when needed, customizing construction progress reports.
  • Review construction contract documents including change orders and lien releases.
  • Review and analyze capitalization of costs to ensure compliance with revenue recognition standards and company policies.
  • Manage process for proper and timely coding of construction invoices (payment applications).
  • Oversee project billings and lien releases for customer and vendor invoices.
  • Facilitate project reporting needs of operational personnel.
  • Identify and assess financial risks associated with construction projects and implement risk mitigation strategies.
  • Implement cost control measures and initiatives to optimize expenses without compromising quality and efficiency.

Essential Skills

  • 10+ years of accounting experience in Construction Accounting (3+ years managing).
  • 3+ years of experience with Procore or other large ERP systems.
  • Ability to understand finance, accounting, banking, bonding, AIA contracts, and federal contracts to some degree.
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks, financial statement reporting, forecasting, and reconciliation.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or MBA a plus).
  • Experience in the commercial construction/general contractor industry.
  • In-depth knowledge of accounting software (Sage and QuickBooks Contractor edition).
  • Experience with Procore.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and construction-specific financial processes and challenges.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across departments.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Self-starter with the ambition for growth.
  • Professional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience reading and/or interpreting construction contracts, lien releases, and other pertinent construction documents.
  • Expert skills with MS Office, including Outlook, Excel, and Word.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret accounting data and perform quantitative analyses.
  • Experience structuring and applying Microsoft Excel solutions to accounting and reporting needs.
  • Adept in responding to common business inquiries from customers, regulatory agencies, vendors, employees, and management.
  • Solid experience processing payroll and other HR functions.
  • Active notary or willingness to become one a plus.

M-F | Normal Business Hours with flexible reporting time (e.g., arrive early to avoid traffic) | Chantilly, VA
