Job Title: Phlebotomist

Responsibilities

• Experience performing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data, and decontamination.
• Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
• Properly explain in a clear but courteous manner the process of venipuncture (blood drawing) and other specimen collections (e.g., urine or fecal) as required.
• Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
• Fully understand all physicians' orders.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
• Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Package specimens for transport.
• Store specimen samples according to the required temperature, place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately label, and follow different procedures specific to protocol to maintain the integrity of the specimen.
• Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
• Attend annual department training sessions.
• Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment as required in some states.
• High School Diploma or GED
• 2-4 years of experience
• Experience with geriatric patients

Work Environment

This position is for an IOP setting with working hours from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.
