Job Title: Substation Engineer


Job Description

We are seeking a staff electrical engineer specializing in substation engineering and consulting services for clients across the US and internationally. This role offers the opportunity to work on diverse projects ranging from small distribution facility upgrades to large transmission projects, influencing the resiliency, reliability, and economic operation of the electric grid.


Responsibilities

  • Lead and execute the design of high voltage (13kV-500kV) electrical substations, including physical layout and electrical protection & control.
  • Develop proposals and scope, including conceptual designs and execution plans.
  • Prepare engineering cost and labor estimates and schedules.
  • Create detailed designs for substation yards, grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, raceways, auxiliary power systems, and associated bills of material.
  • Design panel arrangements, one lines/single lines, three lines, AC schematics, DC elementaries, equipment wiring, and relay panel wiring.
  • Prepare calculations and reports for grounding, lightning protection, AC/DC load studies, and more.
  • Develop specifications for procurement and factory acceptance testing.
  • Collaborate with Civil/Structural, Networks, Transmission Line, and other departments.
  • Provide guidance and mentoring to less experienced team members.
  • Regularly meet and correspond with clients and outside personnel.
  • Perform quality reviews for other engineers and designers.
  • Offer short-term field support during construction.
  • Support business development and marketing initiatives.
  • Engage in relay settings, 3D/intelligent design, or industry/professional technical committee involvement.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited program.
  • Minimum 3 years related experience with physical substation design and/or protection and control design. (Completion of master's degree in related field may be substituted for one year of experience)
  • Completion of FE exam strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with National Electrical Safety Code and IEEE / ANSI Standards.
  • Experience with Autocad, Microstation, P&c, etap, electrical design, power delivery, high voltage, electric utility, utility design.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Capability of solving difficult problems that require adaptation and modification of standard approaches, techniques, procedures and criteria.

Work Environment

Mainly on-site in Vancouver, WA, with flexibility for work from home. Employees are provided with 30 work from home/remote days per year.
