National Industries for the Blind

Alexandria, Virginia, United States

NIB is a dynamic organization seeking motivated and energized candidates dedicated to helping us achieve our mission to create jobs for people who are blind. Career opportunities exist for people of all experience levels and professional backgrounds. At NIB, we put the mission first, and that helps to ensure that all of our team members work together toward a common goal. We call this philosophy “Mission Possible.” At NIB, it’s not just a job — it’s a mission!

About Us

Despite their continued gains in employment, people who are blind remain one of America’s greatest untapped labor resources. There is nothing more central or important to NIB and our associated agencies than creating employment opportunities for people who are blind.

NIB and its network of more than 80 associated agencies serve as the largest single source of employment for people who are blind in the United States. As a result, our agencies provide customers with a wide array of quality products and services while allowing people who are blind to lead more productive and independent lives, pay taxes, help support families and join in the American work experience.

Our History

In 1971, the legislation was renamed the Javits-Wagner[1]O’Day (JWOD) Act and amended to include employment opportunities for people with significant disabilities and the provision of services to the federal government.

Today, the program is known as the AbilityOne® Program and administered by the U.S. AbilityOne Commission®, an independent federal agency, with assistance from two central nonprofit agencies: NIB and SourceAmericaTM.

While committed to the AbilityOne Program and its federal customers, NIB has also strengthened and expanded relationships with commercial companies and state governments to increase employment opportunities for people who are blind.
